“Bonding” Seals in Place – Achieving the Optimal Process Solution with Precision CA Dispensing Technology

“Bonding” seals in place may initially sound counterintuitive, since adhesives can affect a seal’s function. In practice, however, these challenges have now been mastered. In particular, the use of cyanoacrylates (CA) has become established — in combination with perfecdos’s non-contact dispensing technology.

The PDos X1 jet valve from perfecdos takes the “bonding” of seals to a new level, making this option economically viable and process-reliable for industrial applications. That said, the choice of cyanoacrylate is important. Once fully cured, many formulations become very hard, i.e. brittle rather than impact-resistant — making them unsuitable for seal fixation.

No problem with the right cyanoacrylate

With the right cyanoacrylate, however, there are no such problems. Targeted adhesive dots securely fix the seals in their intended position. This offers several advantages: designs can be simplified and complex groove geometries reduced. In production, the fixation ensures stable processes, since seals can neither shift nor get lost. Whether assembly is manual or automated, the risk of assembly errors — and the leaks that result from them — is minimized.

Non-contact precision dispensing

The strength of perfecdos’s technology lies in the non-contact, high-precision dispensing of cyanoacrylates. This also applies to materials that offer many benefits here but are otherwise more difficult to dispense. There’s therefore no reason to shy away from these adhesives. The PDos X1 makes it possible to apply the smallest amounts of adhesive reproducibly and cleanly. Typical problems associated with conventional dispensing systems — such as overdosing, contamination, or clogged equipment — are avoided as a result.

“What is theoretically a sound solution, but one that is often difficult to control in practice, becomes a robust series production process,” says Benjamin Kratz, Managing Director of perfecdos GmbH. He adds that “jet-bonding” seals in place is the path to higher component quality, less scrap, and significantly improved process reliability.
